Eli Mattson ~ Door County’s own Piano Man

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

p9240072Eli Mattson recently had two concerts at TAP, Third Avenue Playhouse, in Sturgeon Bay.

Third Avenue Playhouse began as a dream-a dream of providing a high quality, year-round community performing arts center in Door County.  Conceived in 1999 by a group of ten local visionaires, the theater first opened its doors in Fall 2000 as a fledgling communtiy theater supported by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers.

In only a little more than five years, the dream  became a reality providing a warm, welcoming environment in which family and friends can enjoy quality entertainment at an affordable price.  In addition to musical and theatrical performances, Third Avenuep92501071 Playhouse also offers classes and workshops throughout the year and is also available as a venue for civic and community organizations.

Eli Mattson was the runner up  on the third season of  America’s Got Talent.    Eli’s music is similar to Elton John and Billy Joel.  Before Eli’s debut on America’s Got Talent, he played at concerts at TAP.  His first concert this past Friday was sold out so he added another.  Three of us from Westwood Shores Waterfront Resort were lucky enough to get tickets for his first show at TAP.  This is the third time that I have personnally been to Eli’s concerts.  This time we had front row center seats!  His concerts get better and better each time I see him.  Everyone enjoyed the show and after the show he does a “meet and greet” where you can have your picture taken with Eli and get an autograph.

Eli was heading to Nashville the day after the concerts to start recording an album.  We wish Eli the best of luck in his future and can’t wait until he comes back to Door County for another concert.

Do you need some great family fun?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

p81600101Recently my son decided for his birthday, he wanted to go to Hands on Art p8160026Studio in Fish Creek.  So we headed there and we had so much fun.  We had been there about five years ago and forgot how much fun it was.

Stepping through the door you’ll hear music, laughter and activity coming from the light-filled upstairs space. A friendly Art Helper will greet you and explain the array projects available. Take your time choosing – relax, wander, and see what others are making – there are endless possibilities here!

Still not sure what to make? Check out their display of finished projects, page through their great art books, or use the internet for inspiration. Their Art Helpers will answer questions and guide you through the process of creating your masterpiece.

Hands On encourages the free-wheeling experiences involved in making art – the drips and splotches of paint on the tables and floor tell a big part of the story.

When your project is finished, depending on the project, you keep it there so they can fire it in a kiln and then pick it up the next day.

It’s a great souvenir to take home with you.

Door County Triathlon ~~Saturday, July 18th, 2009- Sprint ~ Sunday, July 19, 2009 – Half-Iron

Monday, July 13th, 2009

door-county-triathlon-startThe Door County Peninsula is often referred to as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” This popular Midwestern tourist destination offers an abundance of lodging, dining, shopping and entertainment options. The sandy shorelines and majestic bluffs along Green Bay north of Sturgeon Bay provide an ideal setting for a triathlon.

Frank Murphy Park is located in Horseshoe Bay, just 15 miles north of Sturgeon Bay and 3 miles south of Egg Harbor. The park has an ornate pavilion, a sandy beach, and a permanent pier that is perfect for spectators. Several large fields directly across the road from the park’s entrance provide ample parking for participants and spectators.

The Door County Triathlon begins on the beach at Murphy Park with a swim in the shallow, crystal clear waters of Horseshoe Bay (average water temperature in late July is 70ºF). The triathlon offers two very distinct course options in both distance and degree of difficulty.

What a Beautiful Weekend!

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

This weekend it was finally summer in Door County.  With the temperature’s in the 80’s, many people were enjoying everything Sturgeon Bay and Door County have to offer.  I was one of those people!  I had the weekend off and my in law’s were up for a visit.

20090620_3While they were here, they stayed at Westwood Shores Waterfront Resort.  On Saturday morning  we went to the Farmer’s Market in downtown Sturgeon Bay.  Here they are standing by one of the vendors.

The Sturgeon Bay Farmers Market is unique because you will meet the people producing the food. Not only will you find your local Sturgeon Bay cherries but in addition you will locate your herbs, vegetables, fruit and discover the taste of Sturgeon Bay!  The Farmer’s Market in Market Square, in downtown Sturgeon Bay is on  Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Whenever my in laws are here, we have to go to their favorite restaurant for breakfast.  That would be the Inn at 20090621_2Cedar Crossing in Sturgeon Bay.  Here I am with Steve Hellmann.  Steve and his wife Kelly own the Inn at Cedar Crossing.  The have a great restaurant and if you are there for breakfast don’t forget to try one of their Raspberry Morning  Buns.  They are delicious!

The Lady with All the Answers

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

20090616_63On Monday, June 15, I was able to go to the dress rehersal of the Peninsula Players first show of the season.   The theatre is nestled in a cedar forest overlooking the waters of Green Bay where you can go and walk along the shore before the play starts and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

The show we saw was  “The Lady with All the Answers”.  It’s a one woman show that is drawn from the life and letters lady_answersclr1of Ann Landers .

ann-landers1No topic was taboo for Ann Landers, the “Mistress of Manners.”  If one needed blunt advice, from wandering spouses to nude housekeeping or lovelorn teens to dispensing the toilet paper correctly, they wrote to Ann who answered numerous letters in a syndicated newspaper column. But to whom can Ann turn when life hands her lemons?  This delightful one-woman comedy is based on Ann’s life, who in reality was Esther “Eppie” Pauline Friedman Lederer.  Peek into her relationship with her husband and twin sister, better known as Dear Abby.

The show runs from June 16 – July 5, 2009.  It’s a beautiful theatre and a great play!
